As you know, I have been in Laredo for the last 2 weeks. I have to say, it wasn't as bad as I thought (at least most of the time). I was expecting it to be a rundown nasty border town, but there was a really nice area of town, which thankfully we were staying in.
I was however, totally thrown off when I showed up to my dorm room to find I shared bathroom/kitchen/living room with a total stranger. Who stunk. Like spoiled Indian food. Gross! The dorm room was so depressing I went out and bought this fun blanket to make me a little happier. And it's paisley of course. I'm so glad I'm done with dorm life!
The clinics we worked in were really nice with tons of assistants. It was like I was a real dentist (almost). I saw mostly kids, which was fun. I was suprised at how many kids actually like going to the denstist. What freaks! I had a little girl ask me to give her a shot today, and was disappointed when I didn't. Like I said... freaks.
When I went down to my rotation, I assured my mom and Jordan that I wasn't really close to the border. I knew the main clinic was on the north side of town, so I wasn't too worried. We were informed there was another clinic we were to work at. a little more south. The border is the blue dotted line, and as you can see, it's not that far...
This part of Laredo was crawling with border patrol officers who looked miserable in their bullet proof vests in the 109 degree heat. I was glad I had my friend, Justin, with me everywhere I went, although I don't know that his 6'4", 100 pound body could do much to protect me.
I don't think I'm going to be eating Mexican food for a while, though, since I ate some form of it every day. In fact, one day I ate Taco Palenque for lunch and dinner... quesadillas both times. I would highly recommend it! Taco Palenque... not eating quesadillas twice in one day...
When I got home today, the hubs had a little suprise for me! In case you can't see, that's a Great American Cookie Company cake... my favorite! I just love that man!
